Construction workshop

The workshops at Cascina Crocetta will be focused on two types of constructions:

THE RESTORATION OF THE “CIABOT”: small buildings used traditionally by farmers for activities related to agriculture. They typically consist of a single functional cell, often with two floors. Ciabot are simple and practical structures built in harmony with the landscape, maintaining the distinct character and construction techniques of the region.

THE CONSTRUCTION OF NEW SPACES at the farm where the school is located will amplify and consolidate the existing buildings. These interventions are recognized as an addition, but they respect the dimensions, materials and constructive typologies typically used in the region.

These year’s workshops will be focused on the construction of a new and more spacious kitchen to be used by the customers of Cascina Crocetta. As it is a new volume installed at the back of the main building, we will work on every step of the process starting with the foundations and ending with the construction of the roof. We aim to merge harmoniously both traditional and contemporary constructive techniques.

1st WORKSHOP: CONSTRUCTION OF LOAD-BEARING MASONRY FROM JULY 14th TO 27th

CONSTRUCTION OF LOAD-BEARING MASONRY

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

The first workshop will be focused on the construction of the foundations and walls for the new kitchen of Cascina Crocetta. This year we will construct an all-new building with self-supporting masonry walls made of Langa stone as we are in a search to combine harmoniously both modern and traditional material and techniques. At the same time, we will also build the containment walls that design the exterior spaces of the kitchen. These walls will be built according with the dry stone building tradition, using all the rules and knowledge that our craftsmen will be happy to share with you.

CRAFTSMEN

Giovanni Bertola and Fernando Gallo: for 50 years they have been working with stone using traditional techniques. They are enthusiastic about their trade and willingly pass their passion onto their students.

Merlino Zeldenthuis: carpenter and master axeman, once he completed his studies at Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts, he then travelled Europe finally choosing Piedmont as the place to build his home.

2nd WORKSHOP: WOOD CARPENTRY FROM JULY 28th TO AUGUST 10th

WOOD CARPENTRY

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

In the second workshop we will continue the works on the masonry walls of the new kitchen of Cascina Crocetta. At the same time we will start with our carpenter to create the wooden structure for the kitchen walls, that will hold the windows, complete the installation of the insulation and set the primary structure of the flat roof of the kitchen.

3rd WORKSHOP: CONSTRUCTION OF THE FLAT ROOF FROM AUGUST 18th to 31st

CONSTRUCTION OF THE FLAT ROOF

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

In the third workshop we will work close by with our carpenter to build the flat roof of the new kitchen of Cascina Crocetta. The flat roof will house a terrace for recreational purposes for the future students of the Banca del Fare, and must therefore have a structure adequately sized for this purpose. At the same time we will work on the laying of the insulation of the kitchen walls. For this purpose we will use a thermo plaster based on a paste of lime and hemp: a mixture of slaked lime and hemp hurds (the woody residue of the plant stem). This plaster is highly valued in green building and has excellent thermal insulation properties, high breath ability and very low hydraulic shrinkage, guaranteeing the absence of cracks. At the head of the work we will have the pleasure of hosting for the first time the restorer, expert on bio-building, Luciano Riberi who, through lectures and practice in the field, will guide us step by step in the making of the mixture and laying techniques of this extraordinary material.

CRAFTSMEN

Luciano Riberi: Founder of Calcinia, Riberi began his career as a restorer 28 years ago, filled by a profound attraction for “matter”, which will remain his passion. In particular the ancient materials, those that have always been used to build, when the whole building was a green building - that is before the “industrial” period, which changed the game and confused the minds and the knowledge of the artisans.

4th WORKSHOP: PREPARATION AND APPLICATION OF LIME-BASED PLASTERS FROM SEPTEMBER 1st TO 14th

PREPARATION AND APPLICATION OF LIME-BASED PLASTERS

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

The fourth and last workshop will be focused on the finishing works of the new kitchen walls of Cascina Crocetta, where the students will learn how to work with lime and cocciopesto (tadelak type) based plasters. Danilo Diante will be coordinating the works as he is an expert on the research and reuse of lime-based plasters and on the use of natural materials. With him we will learn how these natural plasters are composed and how to prepare them to be of high quality. We will talk about the quantity and quality of the inert, the different typologies of binder, the characteristics of the walls and the correct way to apply these plasters by doing it on site. At the same time we ill be able to finish the works on the flat roof that the precedent students started to build.
